Die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika zählen zu den wirtschaftlich reichsten und politisch stärksten Staaten der Welt.
Die USA sind eine demokratische Republik mit föderativem Regierungssystem; die Bundesstaaten haben ihre eigene Gesetzgebung.
Regiert wird der Staat durch den Präsidenten.
Zusätzlich zu den 50 Bundesstaaten erstreckt sich die amerikanische Regierungsgewalt auch noch auf verschiedene
Inselstaaten im Pazifischen Ozean und in der Karibik.
Die USA sind einer der größten Nahrungsmittelhersteller der Welt.
Das Meer und die Flüsse bergen reichlich Fischbestände.
Das Land verfügt über große Rohstoffreserven wie Öl, Kohle, Gold, Uran, Kupfer und Eisenerz, aber auch die Holzindustrie spielt eine große Rolle.
Das Festland der USA läßt sich in drei geographische Großräume einteilen.
Der östliche Teil besteht aus dem Gebirge der Appalachen und der
Küstenebene am Atlantik.
Das weite Becken des Mississippi und des Missouri umfaßt den mittleren Teil.
Die westliche Region wird von Gebirgszügen, Wüsten und der Tiefebene am Pazifik eingenommen.
Darüber hinaus gibt es zwei vom US-amerikanischen Festland getrennte Bundesstaaten :
Alaska und Hawaii.
